Barkhan a district in the north-west of the Balochistan province ofPakistan. Barkhan is derived from Baro Khan, the founder of the Barozai family ofPannis, who either ruled this area on behalf of the governors of Sibi or owned it himself. Barkhan, was given the status of a district on 31 December 1991. Presently the district has one subdivision, Barkhan Tehsil, which is itself subdivided into 8Union Councils (local governmental bodies).[1]

The population of Barkhan was es بار کھان timated to be over 185,000 in 2005[citation needed]. The majority of population is rural. Over 99% of the people of the area are Muslims. The major Baloch tribe in the district are the Khetran,Mandwaniand the language spoken in this area is Khetrani and Sariki.[2]
